Nora (11 y/o): “Using ortho-k lenses is a natural part of everyday life for me”

Previously, we shared Eva’s experience with orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses, and how they gave her more comfort and allowed her freedom from glasses in her everyday life.

But this time, we’re looking at a younger perspective. Sharing her personal story is 11-year-old Nora, a physically active girl who does gymnastics. She used to wear glasses, but they didn’t quite fit her daily lifestyle. “It was uncomfortable to play sports with glasses on, and it was difficult to look at things up close or read,” she says. 

At first, the idea of orthokeratology lenses seemed a little scary to Nora. “I was a bit scared of having to wear them every night,” Nora recalls. As she had never worn lenses before, the first few times took some getting used to. “In the beginning, it was a bit frightening and uncomfortable to put them on – it’s just a completely different sensation.” 

Nora has been wearing ortho-k lenses for 1.5 years now and they’ve become a natural part of her everyday life. She can now see clearly while playing sports and does not need to rely on sound or guesswork. Getting through the school day is also more comfortable because she doesn’t have to worry about whether or not she has her glasses with her. In addition, orthokeratology has been highly effective in slowing the progression of myopia (nearsightedness), which is especially important during a child’s formative years. 
For Nora, the most exciting part was how quickly she noticed the changes. “It was really interesting to realise that I could see – I’d go to sleep and then wake up seeing everything clearly,” she says. 

When asked what she would say to another child or young person just starting out, her answer was simple and encouraging: “Definitely try it! They’re quite comfortable – you just sleep with them at night, take them off in the morning and you can see clearly.” Nora's mother adds, “At first, I was also surprised that the lenses could be worn while sleeping, but the experience has been very positive. I would definitely recommend this option to other parents as well.”
