Spring is the perfect time to have your child’s eyes examined
· updated
Myopia (nearsightedness) in children has increased rapidly in recent years. Studies have shown that myopia often progresses most rapidly during the winter months, which is why new cases of myopia are often detected in the spring.
The reason for why this happens is quite logical. In winter, children spend more time indoors with less natural daylight, and the amount of near work increases, such as doing schoolwork, reading and using screens. At the same time, they tend to spend less time outdoors. These factors can contribute to the development and progression of myopia. That’s why spring is a great time to have a child’s eyes examined, even if the child hasn’t noticed any changes.
How often should your child’s eyes be examined?
If a child has already been diagnosed with myopia, it is recommended to have their eyes examined about every six months to monitor whether their myopia is progressing. If myopia has not been diagnosed, your child’s eyes should be examined every two years or so. Regular check-ups help detect changes early and allow for timely intervention if necessary.
Eye exam at Pro Optika
Pro Optika optometrists are qualified to assess the vision of children and young people and to give advice on how to slow the progression of myopia. For a more thorough assessment, we also have myopia clinics, where the eye’s axial length can be measured. This provides the most accurate way to monitor the progress of myopia and to evaluate how well myopia-preventing solutions are working.
Our myopia clinics are located in:
Tallinn – Pro Optika, Kaubamaja tn 4,
Tartu – Pro Optika, Lõunakeskus.
Eye exams for children and young people are available at every Pro Optika store. A spring eye exam can help make sure your child’s vision is healthy and spot any changes early.
